The district court found the evidence of the confessions was inadmissible because of the voucher rule \u2013 a common-law rule that prohibits the defense from cross-examining a witness when the prosecution failed to do so \u2013 and the fact that the statements were hearsay. Under the Due Process Clause, defendants have the right to confront and cross-examine witnesses and to call witnesses on their own behalf. The Court also held that the hearsay statements were not untrustworthy evidence but were a crucial part of Chambers\u2019 defense and could have led the jury to a different decision.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EJustice William H.
